The mystery behind Itadori’s parents has gone unanswered for some time, but Chapter 143 of JJK sheds some light on the sorcerer’s tricky past.

Over the past five years, Jujutsu Kaisen has quickly become one of the most beloved franchises in the shonen genre, due in large part to its cast of colorful characters. Of the numerous sorcerers, curses, and civilians that appear in the series, few are more well-liked by fans than its protagonist, Yuji Itadori. The inexperienced jujutsu sorcerer quickly won the hearts of fans with his courageous, charismatic personality, but despite his significant role in Jujutsu Kaisen’s narrative, very little has been revealed about his backstory or family lineage.

In the opening scene of Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuji Itadori’s grandfather lies dying. Just before he passes away, the elderly man asks his grandson if he would like to know the truth about his parents. This query seems like a clear indication that Yuji’s parents are more significant than they first appear to be, a theory that is amply validated as the show progresses. The truth about his parents and the rest of his family ties, however, will probably remain a secret until he is coerced into learning about them, leaving readers to fill in the details while they can. Yuji himself disregarded this conversation.

Yuji Itadori's Parents Could Explain His Odd Abilities

With the exception of the opening sequences in Jujutsu Kaisen that include Yuji’s grandfather, very little information about his family is revealed until much later in the story of the series. Yuji meets Yuta Okktosu, the lead character of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, a second-year student, after the disastrous events of the Shibuya Incident. The protagonist of the series finally catches his breath after proving that Yuta is in fact an ally, giving him time to mull on the hectic events that took place during the Shibuya Incident.

Chapter 143 follows Yuji as he experiences a dream that appears to be a flashback of real events from when he was a newborn baby; during this dream, both Yuji and the fans are treated to the first glimpse of his parents in the entire series. This is one of the most perplexing and shocking moments in Jujutsu Kaisen. In the dream, Jin Itadori, Yuji’s father, is shown carrying a small Yuji and having a contentious conversation with the boy’s grandfather. Evidently worried, Yuji’s grandfather advises Jin to avoid “that woman,” and then even more shockingly, Yuji’s mother Kaori shows up.

Fan Theories Regarding the Sources of Yuji’s Abundant Power
  • Sukuna and Yuji are related by blood
  • Yuji is from a lineage of incredibly strong sorcerers.
  • Yuji Is a Cursed Womb: Death Painting

All of Yuji’s grandfather’s fears seem lot more reasonable after Kaori is presented. The woman’s head has a set of scars that are unmistakably the same as those on Suguru Geto’s body, indicating that Yuji’s mother was once a vessel for the evil sorcerer Kenjaku, for some unidentified and sinister reason. This revelation fundamentally reinterprets Yuji’s innate talents and raises the possibility that extraneous forces may have influenced his capacity to act as Sukuna’s vessel.

Regretfully, Jujutsu Kaisen hasn’t disclosed any additional details regarding Yuji’s parents—aside from a moment in which Kenjaku claims that Kaori’s Cursed Technique has something to do with antigravity. It is very possible that Yuji was experimented on as a child, possibly even as a continuation of Kenjaku’s research on another group of characters, the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings, given his morbid sense of curiosity.

It Looks Like Yuji Has a Number of Siblings

Yuji Itadori and his classmate Nobara Kugisaki meet two enemies after the Goodwil Exchange Event that are very different from your typical curses. Together with their seven siblings, Eso and Kechizu, who are truly half-curse, half-human hybrids as a result of forbidden experiments carried out by Kenjaku in the past, comprise a group known as the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings. The characters of Jujutsu Kaisen meet Choso, the only other Death Painting to attain physical maturity, following the murders of Eso and Kechizu by Yuji and Nobara. Furious at his siblings’ deaths, Choso almost kills Yuji during the Shibuya Incident, but he stops short when he gradually learns that Yuji is also a product of Kenjaku’s horrific experiments.

Choso quickly abandons Kenjaku’s side of the battle and joins Yuji Itadori and Jujutsu Kaisen’s other protagonists in taking up arms, promising to defend the protagonist of the series as his newly adopted brother. It is later revealed that the DNA of Kenjaku or his host body is present in the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings, suggesting that Choso and Yuji may share some genetic material. Given this, their brotherly relationship appears entirely justified and is among the most intriguing relationships in all of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Even though the story of Jujutsu Kaisen is barreling towards its conclusion, there are still a tonne of unanswered issues. Yuji Itadori’s family history is arguably the longest-running mystery in the entire series, and there are significant hints in several arcs that suggest his relationship to characters like Kenjaku and Choso could play a significant role in the series finale, even though his lineage might not seem as important as the other problems besetting the jujutsu community.

Currently, Kenjaku, strengthened by Tengen, and a fully resurrected Ryomen Sukuna pose a serious threat to Yuji Itadori and his supporters. Though characters like Yuta, Maki Zenin, and Kinji Hakari are leading the charge in this trend, Satoru Gojo frequently makes references to the strength of the next generation of jujutsu sorcerers. However, Yuji’s family history subtly implies that he might wind up being the most powerful of them all.
