Breaking Down Luffy's Gear 5 Deactivation: What Lies Beneath?

The effects of Luffy’s Gear 5 metamorphosis might be very negative.

Fans of One Piece had to wait more than a year to watch Gear 5 Luffy in animation, but it was well worth it. In Episode 1072, Luffy continues to overpower Kaido with his newly discovered ability, but Gear 5 deactivates in the middle of their battle, and it is revealed that using Gear 5 for an extended amount of time has a cost for Luffy. Although each of Luffy’s earlier transformations had their own drawbacks, none seemed to be as taxing as Gear 5.

Due to the Devil Fruit Awakening, which can only occur when a Devil Fruit user’s mind and body catch up to their Devil Fruit’s real power, Gear 5 was finally made available to Luffy. after they employ their abilities, other people who have awoken their Devil Fruits also experience some level of tiredness, but none of them appeared as worn out as Luffy did after Gear 5 deactivated.

Near the end of the Wano Arc, it was revealed that Luffy actually ate the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika. For more than 20 years, One Piece fans thought that Luffy’s Devil Fruit was a Paramecia that gave his body the qualities of rubber. With the aid of this Mythical Zoan, Luffy can transform into Nika, the Sun God and Warrior of Liberation. Now that he has complete control over his rubber body, Luffy is able to manage both his environment and other living things as if they were also composed of rubber. His athletic prowess is also greatly improved.

Zunesha, the enormous elephant who carries Zou, claims that it has been 800 years since this Devil Fruit last came to life. Additionally, it seems that Joy Boy was the one who first awoke this power. The World Government is attempting to forget the Void Century, which is when Joy Boy, a legendary character, lived and worked. This would account for the World Government’s long-standing efforts to obtain the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika.

Fortunately, the Devil Fruit continued to elude them. Even trying to disguise its existence by dubbing it the Gum-Gum Fruit, the World Government tried. Ironically, it was the World Government’s command for one of its operatives to get involved in Luffy’s struggle with Kaido that caused Gear 5 to awaken.

When Luffy is utilising Gear 5, his heartbeat synchronises to a unique musical beat called the Drums of Liberation. More and more islands are rising up in rebellion against the World Government ever since Luffy awoke Gear 5. It stands to reason that there might be some negative side effects if Gear 5 and its unique heartbeat could genuinely affect world events.

Luffy's Gears Have Side Effects

Luffy has access to a variety of Gears, and each one has a unique function. When Luffy battled Blueno, a CP9 agent, in the Enies Lobby Arc, Gear 2 was first seen. Luffy’s physical strength and speed both increase slightly when he activates Gear 2. Without powerful Observation Haki, his opponent cannot see the onslaught of punches he can fire.

Luffy can use Gear 2 to make his blood vessels and internal organs expand and contract without breaking because they are also made of rubber. Luffy is able to boost the blood flow in his body as a result. Although Luffy’s speed is often overwhelming because to this power, his metabolism speeds up as a result. At first, he ran the risk of suffering a brief paralysis if he used it excessively. Robb Lucci made the critical point that the user’s longevity would be shortened by such an ability.

By blowing a lot of air into his thumb, Gear 3 enables Luffy to enlarge his bones and expand his limbs. Although he gives up a lot of movement, his limbs can grow to the size of a giant, making his physical assaults much more potent. He is also capable of striking a larger area quite hard. At first, anytime Luffy turned off Gear 3, his entire body would contract, leaving him defenceless. The length of time that Gear 3 was active was the length of time that he remained in this shrunken state. Thankfully, with time, Luffy no longer had severe physical negative effects from using Gear 2 and 3.

Gear 4 entails Luffy inflating his muscular structure while coating his limbs with Armament Haki, and it is a technique he has utilised against formidable foes including Doflamingo, Katakuri, and Kaido. There are a number of issues with this gear. When Gear 4 hits its limit, it will automatically shut off, leaving Luffy worn out and exposed. Additionally, he is briefly unable to use Haki. At first, using Gear 4 twice in a succession would render Luffy unconscious for three days.

The Long-Term Effects Of Gear 5

As with Gear 4, Gear 5 likely has a set time limit because when Luffy first used it on Kaido, the metamorphosis deactivated after a short period of time. When this limit is reached, Luffy briefly reverts to normal before his body starts to deteriorate. He also struggles with crippling weariness and exhaustion. As a result, Luffy can revert to Gear 5 by making his heart beat in time with the Drums of Liberation. Since Gear 5 gives Luffy total control over his battle strategy, he should be able to simultaneously employ elements of his other Gears. This would account for why Luffy is so exhausted when Gear 5 turns off. Unfortunately, it also implies that Gear 5 will probably make Luffy live less time than Gear 2 did.

Given that the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika, is a Mythical Zoan, Luffy must take care to prevent his Devil Fruit from consuming his mind. Every time a Zoan awakens their Devil Fruit, there is a chance that the resulting animal may eat the user’s mind. If Luffy is careless, Nika will be able to control his thoughts. Impel Down introduced this type of awakening when four guards changed into enormous bipedal creatures. It is possible that Gear 5 switches off to prevent the consumption of Luffy’s thoughts. It would not make much sense for Gear 5 to permanently keep Luffy’s consciousness away given that it gives its owner total freedom.

Given that when Gear 5 is activated, the entire planet essentially transforms into Luffy’s playground, it makes sense why Kadio claimed that Gear 5 is the most ludicrous power in the universe. Luffy must be partially unaware of a time component based on how Gear 5 initially deactivated. Since the transformation is obviously influenced by Luffy’s heartbeat, there may be a certain number of beats that must be maintained for safety.

When Gear 5 deactivates on its own, it is evident that Luffy is extremely exhausted, yet he soon regains his energy and his body ages to its present state.
